Spring System Vs. Pulley System – Garage Doors

Duluth Garage Door Repair

If you are researching garage doors and installation or repair services, you are sure to discover a lot of new terminology.

Let’s start with garage door springs – extension springs and torsion springs. When a spring system is mentioned, this is a reference to the torsion springs. A pulley system is a reference to extension springs. Did you know that extension spring doors have four pulleys? Yes, there are two sets of two. Both types of springs and systems are very important.

What is a spring system?

A spring system, otherwise known as torsion springs, are located at the top of the garage door. They are made up of cables, torsion spring bar, a drum, and other components. You can typically find them mounted on the header, inside the door. Torsion springs support the garage door’s weight overall, allowing it to open and close smoothly and safely. Drums and cables assist with the heavy lifting. In comparison to extension springs or a pulley system, the torsion spring system tends to last longer.

What is a pulley system?

Extension springs might not be expected to last for as many openings and closings as torsion springs, but they are still utilized. They are located on either side of the garage door. They utilize cables and pulleys which enable the garage door to be used when needed. To work, the pulley system must be balanced. If one spring is damaged or otherwise not working in the set of two, you are going to need someone to come out to provide repair or replacement. Extension springs become loose when the garage door opens and stretch when it closes. Support brackets and safety cables go hand in hand with extension springs.

Hopefully you now have a better understanding of a pulley system versus a spring system.

A pulley system versus a spring system comprises extension springs and torsion springs that allow your garage door to do its job, which is to open and close safely and protect what is inside your garage. Again, a spring system is a reference to the torsion springs. A pulley system is a reference to extension springs.
