Garage Door Won’t Open or Close With Remote

Duluth Garage Door Repair

When you are unable to gain access to your garage, this could become very upsetting. There are various reasons why you might not be able to open your garage, but very specific reasons if you have a remote. So, don’t just continue to inconvenience yourself, instead, get an answer to your problem.

Dead Batteries

The moment you discover that the problem you’re experiencing is due to your remote, you may head to your nearest hardware store to buy more batteries. While this is often one of the main reasons someone’s remote stops working, we think it’s also fair worth noting that you should pay particular attention to the type of batteries you purchase.

If you are noticing that you’re buying more than your share of batteries for your garage remote; you might stop to ask yourself is this due to the type of batteries your buying. There are definitely some batteries that will hold their value much longer.

By using a better quality of batteries, you may not have to worry about running to the hardware store so often or being inconvenienced because you can’t access your garage.

Prior to buying and installing new batteries, you should make sure that you check the contacts. If they are dirty or wet, this might actually be your problem. If they are wet, you have to make sure they are dried off before installing the batteries. If you have more than one garage remote, check it too. Most people have more than one remote, especially when there is more than one driver in the household. If you have one that is working like usual and one that is not, chances are that the problem is the battery and not the remote.

If neither of the remote controls work, then this may take a little more investigating.

Interference

If you have checked the remote and noticed that the one is working but the other is not, you should check to make sure there is nothing in front of the transmitter. Believe it or not, this could be something like debris. If you clean the area, the remote may receive a better signal from the receiver.

At the bottom of your garage is a photo eye. Sometimes that photo eye may get a little dirt on it and this could also obstruct the view of the transmitter. This should be gently wiped off and once it is, your remote should work like normal again. Also check the antenna. Adjusting the antenna slightly might help the situation.

Rest the Remote

Now that we have discussed the easy fixes, here is something that you may have to depend on us to do for you, reset the remote and automatic garage door opener. Just like a computer sometimes needs to be rebooted, so does these components of your garage.

However, if you would like to attempt to rest your remote and opener prior to contacting us for additional help, here is what we suggest that you do. Simply remove the batteries and leave them out for up to 30 seconds. Also unplug the receiver and do the same; leave it out for at least 30 seconds. After the 30 seconds is up, put the batteries back in and plug the receiver back in. This should do the trick.

Erasing Remote Control Codes

The remote control and receiver have codes that correspond to each other and will react when you press the remote-control buttons. If there was a low frequency, it could interfere with your neighbors remote. Unfortunately, this problem still occurs for some people. This was once a serious problem because burglars were able to compromise your transmitter to gain access into your garage.

Since this was such a huge problem, something needed to be done to prevent this problem from continuing to occur. This is when someone created the rolling code. This means there is a code that will change every time the garage is opened and closed. However, this didn’t completely fix the problem because sometimes the code gets rearranged and will not communicate effectively to the receiver. This means that the codes will need to be erased.

To erase the code, holding down the learn button, located on the receiver, for 6 seconds will erase the codes. You will notice the indicator light on the learn button will go out, meaning that the codes have been successfully erased.

Getting Professional Help

In most cases, it is fairly easy to fix the problem that you are experiencing with your remote. It may time a little time and investigating but once you can pin-point the exact problem, it’s easy to fix. The fixes that we just mentioned are the ones that work most often.

In some instances, however, this doesn’t always work. There is also the possibility that the person didn’t do it right.
